German language competency required enrolling in German 5 – Fall Semester: Understanding: The student should be able to understand the main ideas of increasingly complex texts about abstract and concrete topics. He/she should be able to talk fluently about the topics covered in the workbook, which relate to communication, science, culture, history, and the future. Speaking: The student should be able to share his/her point of view. He/she should be able to speak in more complex sentences. The language learner should be able to discuss and structure arguments about topics like communication, science, culture, history, and the future. Reading: The student should be able to fluently read and comprehend texts and articles at B2 level. Writing: The student should be able to write in complex and structured sentences. He/she should be able to share his/her point of view. The student should be able to present in an essay the pros and cons for various topics. Grammar: New textual context, comparisons with als/als ob/ als wenn subjunctive II, participles as adjectives, adjectives, verbs and nouns with prepositions. The student should be able to use indirect speech. He/she should begin to be generally knowledgeable in German grammar, making him/her able to express almost anything clearly and concisely in written and spoken German.
