German language competency required enrolling in DaZ Level 3 – Fall Semester: Understanding: The student should be able to understand all classroom instructions. He/she should be able to understand simple stories and texts based on the vocabulary taught in the classroom. Speaking: The student should be able to express him- or herself in simple German. He/she should be able to ask and answer simple questions. Reading: The student should have knowledge of all German letters, phonetic letter combinations, and sounds. The student should be able to read books at German first grade level. The student should read out loud with the correct pronunciation of sounds. Writing: The student should be able to write simple sentences and short stories (approx. 3-5 sentences). The student should be familiar with the phonetic peculiarities of the German language and know how to apply phonetic rules to spell simple words correctly most of the time. Grammar: The student should have an awareness of German articles (der, die, das), and intuition for declination and conjugation in oral communication. The student should know to capitalize nouns. He/she should be aware of basic sentence structure in written communication.
