About This Activity
Join the Marine Science Institute for a 2.5-hour exploration of the San Francisco Bay aboard the 90-foot research vessel, the R.V. Robert G. Brownlee and discover the life in the estuary and how we are connected to it. Working as a team, participants deploy a 16 foot trawl net to bring fishes on board, set a Peterson Mud Grab to collect a sample of sediment from the bottom of the bay (the benthos) to examine closely to discover live invertebrates, and lastly observe and discuss live plant and animal plankton using a microscope and digital display. Don't forget a lunch because you will get to enjoy it while cruising around the South Bay! What an exciting day! Must be at least 5 years old to board; all children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult; close-toed shoes required. All attendees must register. Any unregistered attendees will not be allowed to participate. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, thus parents or guardians must register themselves and each additional person (second parent, siblings, any extra persons), Newly implemented safety precautions due to Covid require all participants to wear mask and practice social distancing. Our facilities have been prepared with your family and our staff’s safety in mind. Please comply to standard health and safety screenings upon arrival, including a health questionnaire, temperature check, and mandatory handwashing.
