Basketball Drills to Make Your Kid a Lockdown Defender

1v1 & Go

Similar to the "Numbers Scrimmage" drill, divide players into two even teams and have each team line up along the baseline with the coach standing between the first players in each line.

The coach initiates the drill by saying "Go!" and the first player for each team gets into a defensive stance and begins sliding towards the intersection of the sideline and baseline. Upon reaching that intersection, the player will continue their defensive slide along the sideline until they reach half court. Upon reaching the intersection of half court and the sideline, the player begins backpedaling towards the center circle in the middle of the court.

As soon as the first player reaches the center circle, the coach tosses out a ball, and both players battle to recover the ball. The player that initially gains possession becomes the offensive player and the player that was unable to retrieve the ball becomes the defensive player. The two players battle until the offensive player scores or the defensive player gains possession.

The coach can add players into the drill to make it two-on-two or three-on-three, and the two teams should compete to a certain point total that will be determined beforehand by the coach.
