Description
We're sorry, but this program / activity is over. The last meeting was Thursday, April 25, 2024.
Art and nature collide in this program that focuses on the invertebrates living in freshwater ponds.Students will start in the classroom where they will look at some of the microscopic underwater life under a microscope. Prompted by what they see under the scopes and additional images around the room, they will create one of a kind watercolor creatures.
While their artwork dries, we will head outdoors to see what macroinvertebrates they can find in the pond. Using dip nets, observation tubs, and field guides, students will collect, observe, compare, identify (hopefully), and return a wide variety of aquatic critters. Crayfish, leeches, dragonfly larvae, water boatman, and more. You never know what will be in your next scoop!
Program is a drop off program for children ages 13-17 and registration is limited to 20 participants. Drop off will begin at 12:20 and pick up will begin at 1:30pm. Park admission is included in the program registration. You are welcome to arrive earlier in the day to hike or enjoy a picnic lunch, but we request only the registered participant attends the program. Please let us know of any accessibility needs for your child.
Weather: This program will take place rain or shine. The pond is outdoors in an area that does not have overhead protection. On a sunny day sunscreen and/or a hat is recommended.
