Grades 1st-4th. Join the Nutty Scientists for a project based-learning inspired curriculum. Over the course of 6 weeks, we will have 3 stories of innovative characters read to the class and two weeks of correlating STEAM projects to go with each one. With each story we will give students the opportunity to empathize with and problem solve like the main characters of the stories, followed by fun, hands-on projects. Instructors: Nutty Scientists staff. 6 classes. No class 1/26, 2/2, 2/16, 3/16.
Stories and correlating projects:
Papa's Mechanical Fish by Candace Fleming. With encouragement and ideas from his family Papa (real life inventor Lodner Phillips) creates a working submarine!! Students will discuss perseverance for growth. They will build egg protecting contraptions (substitutes can be made available for allergies!) as well as robots that make art!
Roberto: The Insect Architect by Nina Laden. Ever since he was a wee mite (a termite, that is), Roberto has wanted to be an architect. Discouraged by his wood-eating family and friends, he decides to follow his dream to the big, bug city. Students will discuss following their own path. They will be given an architect challenge and create marble mazes!
Mr. Ferris and his Wheel by Katherine Gibbs Davis. Capturing an engineer's creative vision and mind for detail, this fully illustrated picture book biography sheds light on how the American inventor George Ferris defied gravity and seemingly impossible odds to invent the world's most iconic amusement park attraction, the Ferris wheel. Students will discuss ambition and innovation. They will build load bearing structures one week, as well as a week of projects exploring the center of gravity.
2/2 class canceled due to remote-virtual learning school day. Makeup class is scheduled to 3/23.
3/2 class canceled. Makeup class is scheduled to 4/6 (no class 3/30 spring break).
Classes will follow AAPS COVID-19 protocols.
