Registration opens for this activity on Sunday, March 10th and ends on Monday, April 1st.
This course is designed for experienced swimmers who want to become American Red Cross Lifeguards. This is a blended learning course with 10 hours of online instruction and 24 hours of in-class instruction. The online instruction must be completed prior to Thursday, April 4, at 10:00 a.m.
Class participants must attend all classes which will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 4-6 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Municipal Pool (534 28th Street).
Advanced skills are taught and information about lifesaving techniques will be presented. Lifeguard and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications are awarded upon successful completion of the course.
Course prerequisites to be completed on Thursday, April 4, at 10:00 a.m. (unless swimmer has done prior testing with Teeter):
- Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
- Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits.
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds. • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. • Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface to breathe (or to get a breath). • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Bring a towel, goggles, swimsuit, dry clothes, sack lunch, sunscreen, and water bottle.
