The American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.
The enter the class, the participant must complete a pre-test:
Swim-Tread-Swim1. Swim 150 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, or a combination of both.2. Tread water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.3. Swim 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
Timed Event (Must be completed in 1 minute, 40 seconds)1. Start in water, swim 20 yards (no goggles)2. Surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10lb object.3. Return to surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping face at or near the surface. 4. Exit the pool without the use of a ladder.
