About This Activity

Includes one overnight camping experience/class and one three day backpacking course designed to build on Wilderschool and Wild Tribe weekly programs. Two experienced instructors lead this specialty program. This is for participants who want to apply and develop skills they are acquiring in other Coyle Outside weekly day programs in a more remote and committed environment. This is a rain, snow or shine program. Overnight camping trip (Oct 29 and 30) - Saturday - meet at Coyle Outside at 9:30 am and travel to a primitive camping site. We will explore the area discovering the natural beauty and character of the given location and practice setting up camp, building and cooking over a fire, learning navigation by orienting ourselves in our camp, practicing knifecraft and foraging as well as having a short lesson/dialogue about decision making and team work in remote outdoor locations/endeavors. We will break camp and return for pick up Sunday at Coyle Outside HQ at 4:30 pm. 3 Day Backpacking (Dec 2-4) - Drop off and pick up time and place same as for the camping trip. We will choose an appropriate destination for the group based on group interest and instructor assessment from the camping trip. Focus will be on building skills and confidence and creating an authentic wilderness/backcountry experience for participants. We will learn how to manage and fit our backpacks, how to read trail signs and indicators and develop awareness while travelling in the backcountry. At camp we will learn to forage for quality fire wood and build a fire in a sub optimal environment, choose sites for and set up reliable group and individual shelter, cook on an open fire and practice knife-craft, orienteering and foraging as opportunities present. We may touch on other topics such as wilderness first aid, tracking, knots and cordage. Coyle Outside will provide families with a suggested seasonally appropriate packing list for both events.
