Even for the most dedicated runner or anyone working out regularly, dealing with the sheer volume of dirty workout clothes can be a real chore. And let's be honest - the funk that builds up in our activewear is often pretty intense. So we decided to put Nonaste to the test and to sit down with Andy Voggenthaler, CEO of Nonaste, for a brief interview. Make sure you read to the end for a special offer from Nanaste to our ACTIVE readers!

Nonaste claims to be more than just a standard laundry detergent - it's a specifically designed for athletes and their stinky cloths. Going beyond typical detergents, Nonaste uses a combination of enzymes and eco-friendly surfactants to banish odors, dirt, and grime from synthetic workout fabrics that often hold onto unpleasant smells.

In our initial trials, we found Nonaste to be quite effective. Our clothes came out of the wash clean and fresh, with no sour smell lingering. The detergent comes in either Zen Fresh (lightly scented) or an unscented formula. We tested more of the unscented version to make sure that we weren’t just masking any lingering odors. Also for those that are traveling, just a quick 20 minute soak in some hot water and Nonaste, your cloths will come out just the same as a full wash.

Nonaste Deodorizing Spray

One of the standout product of Nonaste is their Odor Eliminating Spray. Everyone needs a bottle next to your shoes. We started by spraying all of the interiors of your running shoes with this spray to remove any and all sweaty feet smell. Now all that is needed from time to time is a follow up spray to keep your shoes, closet and house smelling fresh, not like feet. You may also think about using the Odor Eliminating Spray on your yoga mat, camping gear, backpacks, gym bags, sporting gloves, and sports gear. We are sure you can come up with countless ways to limit all kinds of odors.

We were able to sit down with Andy Voggenthaler, Founder & CEO of Nanaste for a quick interview.

What made you dive into the detergent business with Nonaste?

AV: There was an “ah-ha” moment in yoga class – Stinky Kevin came rolling in to class and I happened to be in that class with my friend and now co-founder Juergen Stark and Kevin about blew out the place with his funk.  As a long time product and brand developer and using a product for our Race Guards uniforms and medical packs that removed odor, we saw an opportunity in the yoga community for a performance laundry detergent that actually removed odor and funk – We did research and found that the market was much bigger than yoga so Nonaste (no-nasty) although originally a play on Namaste was born into what you see today.

How does Nonaste differentiate itself from traditional detergents in terms athletic apparel? AV: What specific challenges does Nonaste address that traditional detergents fail to overcome?

In simple terms, Nonaste lifts and removes oils/bacteria caused by sweat by leveraging specific enzymes and plant based surfactants.  Performance fabrics like activewear does a great job of wicking sweat from your body and also does a great job of trapping that gunk in between the synthetic fibers – Traditional detergents leverage fragrance to make you think it is clean coming out of the washer but as soon as you wear the item and start heating up the bacteria is reactivated causing funk.  Nonaste removes the odors while also helping to revitalize the fabric to help it perform like new.

In what ways is Nonaste environmentally friendly? Are there any sustainability initiatives or practices implemented in the production, packaging, or distribution of Nonaste detergent?

AV: Nonaste is made in the USA, using plant based surfactants and enzymes to do the work – Our bottles are recyclable and we are always looking to produce products that are safe for the environment.  We also give back 10% of net profits to the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF)

How does Nonaste address concerns about potential skin irritation or sensitivity, particularly for individuals with sensitive skin who may be using moisture-wicking athletic apparel?

AV: Our products are great for people with sensitive skin.  Our Pure Clean performance laundry detergent (zero fragrance) is fantastic for people with sensitive skin.

What feedback have you received from customers who have used Nonaste detergent? Are there any testimonials or success stories that highlight the effectiveness of the product in removing odors and maintaining fabric integrity?

AV: Customers love our products and our subscription rate is off the charts – People are ordering and re-ordering our products.  One thing some of our customers have done and we incorporate it with marking materials is what we call the “Soak and See for Yourself Challenge” – Simply fill a sink with warm water, pour in ½ an ounce to an ounce of Nonaste detergent in,  grab a pair of CLEAN but used running shorts/shirt, yoga pants, whatever, toss it in the sink, give a quick swish and wait 20 mins – You will be amazed at the gunk that comes out of your “CLEAN” activewear. It really is compelling.

Can you share any future plans or developments for Nonaste, such as new formulations, product expansions, or sustainability initiatives? How do you envision Nonaste evolving in the future to meet the needs of athletes and environmentally conscious consumers?

AV: This is a great question as we have lots in the works for Nonaste.  Along with our performance laundry detergents, odor eliminating sprays, best-in-class hand sanitizer and sanitizing sprays, we are working on many other products such as a Stink Bag (bag for your sweaty clothes), and other household essential products.  All products will be environmentally friendly but also extremely effective.  We even have high end pet products in the works; shampoos, conditioners, and odor spray for active pets!
