About This Activity

Instructor: Beverly Eggert, a retired Beaufort County English teacher, served as the featured lecturer and program director for the Beaufort County History Center/Beaufort County Library lecture series. She also served as the program director and lecturer for the Santa Elena History Center in Beaufort and was a lecturer for the South Carolina Humanities Festival. Description: Mary Surratt (1823 - 1865) was an American boarding house owner who became the first woman executed by the United States federal government for her involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. She was hanged on July 7, 1865. An ongoing historical debate exists regarding whether she was a key conspirator or merely a participant in the assassination. After hearing the evidence, what will be your decision?
