Instructor: Dr. George Hummert is an electrical engineer who spent much of his career at the Westinghouse Research Laboratory in Pittsburgh. He has lived and worked in Aiken since 1993. His technical background includes a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon and studies of electric and magnetic field theory, which sparked his interest in relativity. Description: In this course, we will examine some of the scientific discoveries that laid the groundwork for Einstein’s 1905 breakthrough papers on relativity. The course does not require advanced mathematics and is structured around Einstein’s “thought experiments”, which ask very simple questions about common events leading to profound conclusions. The course first examines “special” relativity and then introduces the concepts contained in “general” relativity.
