About This Activity

Instructor: Bill Wabbersen, a nuclear engineer, worked at the Savannah River Site for almost 30 years and retired from SRNS and later from NNSA. Bill has conducted nuclear science educational outreach activities across the US. Honors include the ANS Landis Public Communication and Education Award and CNTA’s Nuclear Service Award. Description: This course will provide students with a broad and basic understanding of nuclear science fundamentals. Students will learn about the atomic nucleus, isotopes, radiation, radioactive half-life, and the uses of nuclear technology in our world today in a unique and approachable manner. Each of the three sessions will involve innovative, easy-to-understand, hands-on activities, performed in pairs or teams, designed to engage students and to reinforce key concepts. In one “hands-on” activity, students “fission” Oreo cookies to simulate the nuclear process. In another activity, students determine the “half-life” of M&M candies. Bonus: The cookies and candy can be consumed at the end of the activities.
