Join us for this one-day workshop consisting of two one-hour sessions. Through visual art, photography, and poetry, 4th and 5th graders are invited to explore identity and storytelling in this dynamic workshop series led by high school artists from the Evan Garrett Young Teaching Artist Collective. Sessions Included: Set the Scene: Photography Teaching Artist: Larissa Jubay In this workshop, students will create and photograph their own scenes to tell a story or show a feeling they care about. Using a variety of objects, they’ll build still lifes and explore how small details can communicate big ideas. Along the way, students will learn the basics of photography, like how to frame a shot and arrange objects thoughtfully. With full control over their “mini studio,” they’ll discover how photography can be a powerful way to express their ideas and imagination. More Than Meets the Eye: Poetry Teaching Artist: Nandana Nair In this workshop, students will explore the idea that what we see on the outside isn’t always the whole story. Through fun, thought-provoking activities, we’ll look at the difference between appearances and what’s really going on underneath. Students will be invited to notice, imagine, and reflect in new ways as they learn to “look beyond the surface.” The workshop will culminate in each student creating their own original poem inspired by what they’ve discovered.
