From classics like The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, to modern reimaginings like Over The Garden Wall and Coraline, one of the staples of the fantasy genre is the journey to “the other world.” In this class, students will study a variety of portal fantasies, from the earliest influences in the ballads of journeys into the lands of faerie, to the founders of the genre like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, to modern retellings like Spirited Away. Students will flex their creative writing muscles by building their own “other worlds,” and flex their filmic and literary analysis muscles through in-depth discussions and journaling about these fantastical lands.
