About This Activity
In this course, we will read two novels in which young adults face unprecedented challenges. In Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet, our protagonist survives a plane crash and must survive in the Canadian/Alaskan wilderness. Then, in Lois Lowrey’s Number the Stars, we meet Annemarie Johansen and Ellen Rosen, best friends who are Jewish and growing up in Nazi-occupied Copenhagen. We will approach these books with enthusiasm and curiosity about children in adverse circumstances. We will read, discuss, and interpret the text for what it is and what it means to us.
