About This Activity

Description

Internet Registration has not begun yet. Check Registration Dates in details.

Grades: 2nd-5th. This class is designed to help students develop crochet skills they can continue using long after the session ends. Rather than focusing solely on completing a specific project, students will build a strong foundation in crochet, gain confidence with essential techniques, and learn to make independent creative decisions about their work.

Throughout the session, students will learn and practice the single crochet stitch, explore different approaches to planning and structuring projects, and learn how to read simple crochet patterns. By the end of the class, each student will have the skills and knowledge needed to continue crocheting independently at home. All materials are provided, and no prior crochet experience is necessary. Instructor: Katherine Williams. 8 classes. No class 10/9 and 10/30.

Weekly Focus

  • Week 1: Introduction to crochet, yarn, hooks, and basic vocabulary. Learn the slip knot and foundation chain.
  • Week 2: Single crochet fundamentals. Exploring yarn-over versus yarn-under. Students choose a project path: infinity scarf or plushie.
  • Week 3: Building confidence with a single crochet. Focus on tension, consistency, and creating even edges.
  • Week 4: Rows versus rounds. Students learn different construction methods and start working toward their chosen project.
  • Week 5: Introduction to pattern reading. Small-group practice following a simple pattern together.
  • Week 6: Independent pattern work, problem-solving, reflection, and sharing progress.
  • Weeks 7: Continued project work, skill refinement, and troubleshooting.
  • Weeks 8: How to finish a project.

Online registration closes at 12 noon two days before the class begins. To register after online registration has closed (depending on class availability), please call 734-994-2300 ext. 0.
