Grades: K-5th. Tom is bored in class and makes a paper airplane… Should he throw it? Will he throw it? What’s happening inside Tom’s brain?
At Neuro Ninjas, we use an original neuroscience curriculum and a cutting-edge, brain-based robot (SpikerBot by Backyard Brains) that allows kids to work on an iPad by adding neurons and connecting them into circuits (neural networks) that define the robot’s behavior. We learn about parts of our brain that regulate fear, wanting and self-control, and how they work together when we make decisions. We also learn that neurons are key elements in those brain regions and discover how they communicate with each other. We make neurons with colorful foam, and brains with clay and resin to take home. We color and play games while learning neuroscience, developing our abstract thinking, solving challenges to design functional neural circuits and growing together.
This is a unique, hands-on opportunity for your child to gain a mechanistic understanding of how the brain works, and why it is sometimes hard to make a choice. Get to know your own brain and become a Neuro Ninja! Instructor: Lucia Guerri, PhD. 8 classes.
Meet the Instructor:
Lucia Guerri is a biomedical scientist with a PhD, as well as the founder, curriculum developer and lead educator of LodeLu -an active contributor to the popularization of the neuroscience of our own identity. She has rich experience in science teaching, outreach, and research spanning Argentina, France, Germany, and the US (Maryland and Michigan). “Neuro Ninjas” has roots in small-group meetings and joint projects on the human brain that she ran as a parent volunteer at an Ann Arbor Public Elementary School. This fun and interactive class will expose students to core concepts on the workings of our brains through hands-on neuroscience and neurorobotics.
Online registration closes at 12 noon two days before the class begins. To register after online registration has closed (depending on class availability), please call 734-994-2300 ext. 0.
