About This Activity
This class is for children who want to get their hands dirty and play in a world of their own creation with a focus on being present in the process of the art and less on the final product. With young children, it’s especially important to use art and mark making as a vehicle for nervous system regulation and self-expression. All skill levels and abilities are welcome. Themes would change weekly, focusing on the somatic experience of the process. An example one week would be making a terrarium with found objects from home or around the nature trails (fallen sticks with no plants or garden spaces disturbed). Other projects may include incorporating outdoor exploration, self-portraits, purposeful clay pieces, mark making and world building with loose parts (small found objects that can be used to create worlds and Maps from a Birds Eye view). Classes are simple but structured and highly engaging. Most materials are provided. Students may be asked to provide some materials.
