About This Activity
A class for teens who want to create their own narrative stories using the beautiful house and grounds of Callanwolde as their location. Students provide their own choice of camera for recording - then use their phones or laptop for editing. During this 10-week class, we break down the process of creating a cohesive story, discussing angles and lighting, basic editing and storytelling. Each student will make their own individual short film with a showcasing at the end of the series. Students are encouraged to bring props and costumes from home. Callanwolde’s gothic style lends itself to a campy, fun horror film, but students choose their own narrative. Week 1 – Building concepts, creating the storyline, making decisions about sound, dialogue, etc. Week 2 – Solidifying story lines and finalizing narratives and dialogue. As an example of storytelling without words, a short film from the pioneer of silent surrealism, Maya Daren will be shown. Week 3 – Discussing how many scenes are needed and planning where the scenes will take place around Callanwolde. Doing test filmings. Week 4 – Possible lighting expert as a guest teacher. Screening other student films as inspiration for techniques and ideas Weeks 5, 6, 7 – Focusing on filming scenes. Week 8 – Last minute filming and editing. Week 9 - Finalizing edits and previewing student films. Week 10 – Screening films for friends and family members.
