About This Activity

Note: This course is open to students who have previously completed the Introduction to Blacksmithing class. Using traditional hand hammered blacksmithing techniques over a coal burning forge, students will forge a basic set of tools for the forge. Initial projects include a fire rake, slot punch, hammer eye drive, and blacksmith's cross peen hammer. Additional projects will be offered as time permits. Returning students may work on project options including: tongs, chisels, punches, drifts, hammers, hardy tools, spring fullers, flux spon, blacksmith's knife, nail headers, and fireplace tools. Materials will be discussed in the first class; fuel for the student's forge as well as the mild and tool steel for planned projects are provided by the studio. Steel for repeat or custom projects can be purchased from the instructor at cost. Students will need to wear 100% natural fiber flame retardant fibers like cotton or wool. No synthetic fibers or blends. Long sleeve shirts and pants that cover tops of footwear. Footwear must be leather or cotton canvas shoes that fully enclose feet. About the Instructor: Garrett lives in Decatur and is a member of the ABANA and Alex Bealer Blacksmith Association of Georgia. He enjoys blacksmithing, dry stone masonry, and building log cabins.
