About This Activity

Get ready to explore the exciting world of ceramics! If you're between the ages of 11 and 16 and ready for a hands-on adventure, join the Clay Explorers crew! Guided by an experienced instructor over four fun-filled Saturdays, we'll dive deep into different ceramic techniques, turning raw, soft clay into four incredible, finished projects you get to keep. Your Expedition Checklist (What You'll Create): Adventure Stop 1: Slab Masks: Express Yourself-From mystical creatures to bold superheroes, our artists are transforming flat slabs of clay into expressive 3D faces. By layering shapes and carving out details, these masks aren’t just wall art—they’re a window into the imagination. Who will you be today? Adventure Stop 2: Draped Coil Bowls: Pattern & Flow-We’re taking the humble coil to a whole new level! By carefully layering "clay snakes" over a mold, the kids are creating intricate, lace-like patterns. These bowls aren't just sturdy; they’re beautiful skeletons of design that show off the rhythm of the hand-rolling process. Adventure Stop 3: Slab Cake: A Secret Slice-It looks good enough to eat, but there’s a surprise inside! Our bakers are using slab construction to "bake" realistic slices of cake, complete with a removable top. This clever lid lifts off to reveal a secret box, perfect for storing tiny trinkets or sweet treats. Adventure Stop 4: Animal Shelf-Sitters: Hanging Around-These little guys are just looking for a place to lounge! By sculpting weighted bodies and dangling legs, the kids are creating animals designed specifically to sit on the edge of a shelf or desk. Whether it’s a lazy lizard or a dangling cat, they’re the perfect studio companions. Grab your spot on the team! Keep in mind that clay is messy when selecting your outfit of the day!
