About This Activity

Get ready to explore the exciting world of ceramics! If you're between the ages of 11 and 16 and ready for a hands-on adventure, join the Clay Explorers crew! Guided by an experienced instructor over four fun-filled Saturdays, we'll dive deep into different ceramic techniques, turning raw, soft clay into four incredible, finished projects you get to keep. Your Expedition Checklist (What You'll Create): Adventure Stop 1: Step into the role of a classical sculptor to tackle the ultimate challenge: the human (or humanoid) form. Over the first two weeks, you will go beyond simple shapes to capture the likeness and spirit of a person who inspires you. Whether it’s a hero from history, a favorite fictional character, or a modern icon, you’ll master the structural mechanics of a ceramic bust. You'll navigate the complexities of facial proportions, learn to map out features like eyes and hair, and use advanced hollow-building techniques to ensure your tribute stands the test of time (and the kiln). Adventure Stop 2: Forget everything you know about traditional kitchenware. This session is a high-stakes design challenge where engineering meets imagination. Your mission is to reinvent the teapot—a vessel notoriously difficult to master. You’ll be balancing the physics of "The Pour" with a radical aesthetic. How do you design a handle that’s ergonomic but looks like a gnarled branch? How do you create a spout that doesn't drip but fits the silhouette of a futuristic engine? It’s a masterclass in blending daring creativity with the non-negotiable rules of functional design. Adventure Stop 3: The series concludes with you launching your own "Signature Brand." You will design and execute a cohesive three-piece dining set—cup, plate, and bowl—that reflects your personal aesthetic. This isn't just about making dishes; it's ab
