Kamishibai: Japanese Storytelling Through Visual Art In Collaboration with Bellevue Art Museum “Kamishibai” is a unique Japanese street performance that is said to be the prototype of Anime. Youth Theatre Northwest has once again invited two artists from Japan, Ta-Chan (Kamishibai performer) and Teru-Kun (visual artist) to lead a week-long camp in how to create and perform Kamishibai. In this camp, held on-site at Bellevue Art Museum, participants will learn two types of Kamishibai: a “Picture Story,” in which the performer tells one complete story using picture panels; and an “Interactive Story,” which uses picture panels to involve the audience in telling a joke or singing a song. No previous art or performance experience are necessary to join. The two artists will guide participants of all levels so that everyone can enjoy the process, learn new skills, and take home a Kamishibai story of their own. Live English translation will be provided but Japanese speakers are encouraged to join, as well.
