About This Activity

Explore the unique structures that our local wildlife create for their homes! Investigate animal habitats of all shapes and sizes, learn what they are made of and how they are built. Campers will design and construct their own animal habitats that help different native species to thrive, including bee homes and butterfly baths. Campers will also learn building techniques to make outdoor survival shelters for human animals out of materials found in the Berkeley hills! Venture out in a peddle boat on Lake Merritt, the oldest wildlife refuge in the U.S., and observe the creatures that call this amazing tidal-lake-estuary their home. Test water quality and plankton samples, and contribute to an ongoing scientific database monitoring the health of the lake habitat. Learn special languages and behaviors that help identify the various birds of Tilden Park. Discover how our human actions can impact the animal structures around us. Make environmentally-friendly natural pesticides to bring home and share with family, friends, and neighbors to help promote bay-friendly gardening habitat practices.
