About This Activity
This academy offers a solid foundation for new or beginning students in the game of chess. The course begins with a brief introduction to the history of chess, covering the basic movements of pieces and special rules such as En Passant, castling, and stalemate. Additionally, students will become familiar with chess notation, a crucial skill for reading chess literature and a prerequisite for participating in chess tournaments. Throughout the course, students will learn checkmate patterns, tactics, openings, endgames, and strategic plays. In the final part of each session, students will engage in matches with their classmates, applying what they have learned to real games. By the conclusion of the course, students will be well-prepared to participate in matches at a chess club. The course will be taught by Sangmin Park, Rivermont's math and computer science teacher and one-time coach of the Johns Hopkins chess team.
