Canoe and Outdoor Skills Camp
Monday and Tuesday 8:00am - 4:00pmCrow Creek Park Quarry
Get ready for two fun-filled days of paddling, adventure, and outdoor exploration! The Canoe and Outdoor Skills Camp is designed for youth ages 10–14 to learn essential canoeing and nature skills in a supportive and exciting small-group setting. Led by experienced instructor Brendan O’Brien from Eagle Bend Canoe Adventures, kids will develop basic paddling techniques, water safety awareness, rescue skills, navigation abilities, and a deeper connection to the natural world, all through hands-on games, challenges, and team-building activities.
Campers are required to bring a nut-free sack lunch with a drink each day, along with a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack. In addition, campers need to bring a refillable water bottle.
Campers should be prepared for the elements of the day, as camp is held outdoors. Children should wear comfortable “play” clothes and sturdy footwear, either tennis shoes or sandals with straps that can get wet. Sun protection such as a hat or long sleeves is encouraged. Please ensure your camper brings sunscreen and bug spray daily. All personal items, including clothing, water bottles, and other belongings, should be clearly labeled with the camper's name.
Canoes, paddles, life jackets, water refills, and all materials needed for afternoon activities are provided by Eagle Bend Canoe Adventures.
Instructor Bio: Brendan O’Brien grew up in Davenport but has spent the past eight years largely living and working in public lands out west. This has included jobs for the Forest Service, National Park Service, and several guiding companies especially focused on hiking and backpacking. Not to mention a lot of exploring on his own – along trails, up rock walls, and down rivers.
Last year, he felt the pull back to more familiar country and paddled a canoe from the source of the Mississippi River (at Lake Itasca, MN) to the sea (at the Gulf of Mexico). When he finished, he found that he didn’t want to leave the river!
