*Students in grades 2-8 may register for this academy as an “add-on” to Camp Rivermont. Students will learn key chess tactics and strategies, including common checkmate patterns, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, and other tactical motifs. The course also introduces positional chess concepts such as pawn structure, piece activity, and identifying weaknesses in a position. In addition, students will develop essential skills for playing the opening and endgame with confidence. To participate, students are expected to already know the basic rules of chess, including how each piece moves, castling, en passant, and stalemate.
