About This Activity

Description

Beginner Karate focuses on rule-play and trusting that three basic rules will ensure a safe martial arts experience! Children will learn the most basic dojo (training hall) etiquette: how to bow and how to listen with their eyes. Attentive practice will keep students aware of their surroundings and fellow students as they begin to learn the basics of sparring in relation to defending themselves. Raising their hand to speak, or demonstrating the Statue of Liberty, gives them a lot of power and a voice in the class.
Students at this level are introduced to incentives and rewards in the form of stripes on their belts that lead to belt promotion. These exciting milestones are based on learning specific material, good behavior, facing challenges and consistent attendance. It should be noted and explained to young students that these stripes are not the same as stickers at school, which are a little bit easier to attain. Stripes are earned and not everyone will be promoted at the same time. For more information on this, please ask Sensei Noah for the password to the Students section of the Boston Budo website.
Equipment needed for this program: Uniforms can be purchased from the instructor for $45 (cash preferred, venmo available) on the first day of class. Your child will need a uniform (dogi), a mouth guard ($3) and boys will need a protective cup ($12). Uniform patches can also be purchased from the instructor ($5). All other needed equipment or materials will be recommended by the instructor the first week or provided by Hill House. Important guidelines and notes for this season: Families are expected to have a guardian or caretaker DROP-OFF their child and leave Hill House facilities. Adults MUST CHECK-IN with Hill House Staff when dropping off, and SIGN-OUT when picking up. If class is cancelled due to inclement weather or the instructor being unavailable, we will offer a make- up class. We are unfortunately unable to provide individual make-up classes if the participant is absent. An administrative fee ($20) may be applied for withdrawal requests after the start of the season. For our most up-to-date health & safety guidelines regarding COVID-19, please visit our website’s dedicated COVID-19 page. All Hill House families are expected to abide by our Code of Conduct—treating our staff, volunteers, and other families with respect. Violations will be reported, and multiple violations may result in action, including removal from programs.
