Crafting for the Wild is a skill-building program focused on creating functional and creative tools using natural materials and traditional techniques. Each day, participants will learn and practice a specific crafting skill that supports self-reliance, creativity, and thoughtful use of resources. Children will be guided through the process of safely gathering appropriate natural materials and transforming them into useful items such as carved wooden utensils, simple fire-tending tools, clay bowls, baskets, cordage, or other functional objects. Instruction emphasizes proper tool handling, step-by-step techniques, and thoughtful design. Skills practiced may include whittling, weaving, shaping, binding, and finishing. As part of the learning process, participants will test and refine their tools to understand how form, material choice, and craftsmanship affect function and durability. Mentors provide direct instruction, demonstrations, and ongoing supervision to support safety and skill development. Throughout the program, children are also introduced to the concept of reciprocity with the land—learning how to gather materials respectfully, minimize impact, and express gratitude for the resources they use. The focus remains on practical skill development, patience, and problem-solving. By the end of the program, participants will have built multiple functional tools and gained foundational skills in crafting from natural materials that support self-sufficiency and confidence in outdoor settings.
