This course is designed for students with little to no prior experience on a band instrument. Students will learn foundational music theory and how to read standard Western musical notation, be introduced to the technical skills required to play their chosen instrument, develop aural skills necessary to recognize rhythm, pitch, and tone, learn proper rehearsal etiquette and establish effective home practice routines, and practice collaboration and build self-efficacy through ensemble participation. 🎯 Assessments As an extracurricular program, the Beginning and Advanced Band will not follow a traditional grading system. Students will instead be assessed through a variety of informal and formative methods, including: “Do as I do” performative imitation. Students are expected to complete weekly practice logs, recording the amount of time spent practicing at home. These must be signed by an adult. ✅ What’s Expected at Every Rehearsal Students must bring the following: Sheet music and assigned repertoire writing utensil (pencil preferred), chromebook or compatible device, completed and signed practice logs, their assigned method book, their instrument, and necessary accessories. What Can Parents Expect? Parents and trusted adults can expect open communication about their child’s progress in the ensemble. Regular updates will be provided on performances, assessments, music, and other related materials. A detailed syllabus outlining the program will be shared after the first day of enrichment classes.
