About This Activity
The reading class for 4th/5th will be available in both the fall and spring semester. The work started in the fall will carry over into the spring. While enrolling in both semesters is optional, please review the curriculum to be sure it aligns with your child’s needs. Additional practice materials and concepts covered that week will be sent home at the beginning of the week but will not be collected in class. Skills to be covered (fall semester): We will use the study of morphology to read and write multisyllable words. Working on fluency will help develop comprehension. Literature study will include story elements (theme, characters, setting, conflict), text features and text structure, and author's purpose. We will be writing summaries of what we have read. Skills to be covered (spring semester): This semester we will build on developing vocabulary through morphology to elicit meaning. We will explain how the theme is developed throughout a literary text while focusing on story elements. Different genres of literature will be explored - including poetry! I have worked as a classroom teacher, a homeschool teacher/tutor, and a reading therapist, and, combined, have 15 years experience in these fields.
