The reading class for 2nd/3rd will be available in both the fall and spring semester. The work started in the fall will carry over into the spring. While enrolling in both semesters is optional, please review the curriculum to be sure it aligns with your child’s needs. Additional practice materials and concepts covered that week will be sent home at the beginning of the week but will not be collected in class. Skills to be covered (fall semester): We will be decoding and encoding words with vowel teams and diphthongs, multisyllable words, and high frequency words. We will read to develop fluency while focusing on accuracy and prosody. As we read, we will identify text features and text structures. To enhance comprehension, we will focus on main story elements, details, and active reading stragegies. Skills to be covered (spring semester): We will continue to develop multisyllable word decoding and encoding through examining common roots and affixes. Fluency will help develop automaticity and comprehension skills. Literature will include poetry, fiction, and nonfiction texts and how text structure is used to enhance meaning. Elements of reading will include: plot, theme, author's purpose, and figurative language.
