About This Activity

Video games are perhaps the most controversial form of media. Are they good for you? Are they bad for you? Are video games art? What age should we start letting our kids play games? What even is a video game? Is Duolingo a video game? AHHHHH! To understand what is, by far, the most complicated medium on Earth, we have to go back… all the way back! Video games 101 is an elementary-level interactive class that talks about the history of video games (and related technology), the people who made them, and how video games became a 522 BILLION dollar industry. Students will spend each week learning about a new game, genre, or era of gaming, what made it important and why. At the end of every class, students will have the ability to try out some of the games that we’ve talked about, but the primary focus will be the history itself.
