About This Activity
Description
Are you a middle-school student? If so, join us for the Bookwriting 101 Writer’s Camp! Five knowledge-packed, fun-filled days where you will learn how to organize your Middle Grade / Young Adult novel.
We’ll read selections from Jessica Brody’s Save the Cat! Writes a Young Adult Novel. And we’ll read a short Middle-Grade novel. We’ll do some writing, and play a few games!
DAY ONE: We’ll learn about why writers call the first quarter of your novel Act I. We’ll discuss themes, heroes, and why your novel must have a catalyst. Games include Two Truths and a Lie, and Hula Hoop.
DAY TWO: We’ll learn about the “upside down” world of Act II, part 1, and subplots. Games include Newspaper Town, Human Knot, Grandma and Pictionary.
DAY THREE: We’ll define the Midpoint of the novel, where a false victory or defeat shifts the direction of the narrative. Games: Charades and Balloon Volleyball.
DAY FOUR: We’ll learn about the second half of Act II, and must-have sections like Bad Guys Close In, All is Lost, and The Dark Night of the Soul.
DAY FIVE: We’ll learn about Act III, Team-Gathering, Executing the Plan, the Bad Guy Surprise, and The New Plan. Games include Hula Hoop and Yarn Knot.
