People who finish writing novels, short stories, poems, and nonfiction have this in common: first they developed the habit of daily writing. How did they do that? My six-week course offers you three paths that will help you make writing part of your day. 1) Freewriting. You’ll write from your head and heart, putting on paper what you need to say. The class will validate your effort. 2) Prompts. During the first class we’ll establish what genre you write in (you’re not locked into it). Do you seek to keep a journal? Create poems? Write stories? Share your experience? Each week I will email you Internet prompts in your genre. You may write to these prompts if you think doing so would be useful. 3) Guidance. I’ll present short overviews of four very different best-selling books that may help you make writing a habit. Week Two: The 8-Minute Writing Habit: Create a Consistent Writing Habit That Works with Your Busy Lifestyle, by Monica Leonelle Week Three: Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones, by James Clear Week Four: On Writing, by Stephen King Week Five: The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life, by Twyla Tharp and Mark Reiter In each class we will write for twenty minutes. I ask that, every day for the six weeks, you write at least one side of a page (300 words) or more, any topic, and email it to me. I’ll also ask you to read a fiction or non-fiction book for at least fifteen minutes a day.
