Public speaking and knowing how to express oneself persuasively are skills that will serve young people both in the classroom and beyond. In Speech Camp, we will work on developing presentation skills and creativity through a variety of speech styles used in the National Speech and Debate Association, ranging from humorous or dramatic readings (in which students select, interpret, and deliver a short piece of drama or literature) to original oratory (in which students research, write, and present a short evidence-driven speech). We will examine the elements of an effective speech and how students can use their voice and pacing to persuade, entertain, or inspire an audience. Students enrolled or considering enrolling in the Upper School Academies Programs (Civic Leadership, Service Learning, or Global Engagement) may want to participate in this camp to further their knowledge in their field of interest. See the link to the Academies page on the PRS website.
