About This Activity
Description
Marmots, woodchucks, and whistle pigs, oh my! What do these names have in common? They're all names for one of America's most famous rodents - the Groundhog! This visionary varmint was made famous back in 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, when a local newspaper had published an article about this annual tradition practiced by several people who had moved there from Germany. This event, that falls on February 2nd of each year, watches the reaction of a hibernating animal (in this case a groundhog) in order to predict the weather for the remainder of winter. A tradition that has exploded in popularity, and is still practiced to this day.Come join us at Fun Forest Playground at Chesapeake City Park for our own take on this tradition. We'll share some fun facts about these often misunderstood marmots, and perform our own family fun Groundhog Day ceremony at the playground stage!
No live groundhogs will be used for the ceremony. Please dress for the outdoor weather that day. May cancel the program for inclement weather.
