About This Activity
Description
The early 17th century Virginia colonists brought their laws regarding God, King and Country with them to the New World. Sometimes unique situations in the colony required new punishments, but in the case of some leaders, like Sir Thomas Dale, they would often break out some archaic punishments upon their criminals so their communities would be in fear of straying from compliance. Our program will demonstrate several crimes and punishments of the early 17th century here in Virginia. Living history interpreters will demonstrate things like crimes that women or even children could be charged with, the various punishments for freeman, workers, and indentured servants.
