Feeling cooped up with the winter blues? Come get a taste of spring adventuring in the park systems with this 7-week after-school program for kids ages 11-14. Meets on Wednesdays in March and April. All equipment, except for bikes, is provided. Parents are responsible for transporting participants to and from the various locations. (No program April 3rd of Spring Break)
March 6th – Wildlife: Rockwood Park - Get an insider’s tour of Rockwood Nature Center, learn about Virginia’s native wildlife, then go for a hike in the park to see if we can spot some in their natural habitats.
March 13th - Vernal pool hike: Dutch Gap Conservation Area - Take a short hike to see if you can find life springing up - see if you can spot any early flowers along the trail or frog eggs and larval salamanders in temporary ponds.
March 20th – Bike: Virginia Capital Trail - Get a taste of the Virginia Capital Trail on this 4-mile out and back paved trail from Dorey Park to Four Mile Creek Park; grab an ice cream from the Dairy Queen to fuel up for your return ride.
March 27th – Archery: Rockwood Park – try your hand, and your aim, at archery at our archery range at Rockwood Park.
April 10th – Team Building: Challenge Course - Check out our Challenge Course for a series of fun low-element obstacles – see how well you work together to solve a series of puzzles and challenges.
April 17th – Rock Climb: James River Park System – harness up and see how high you can climb Manchester Wall while being belayed by professional staff.
April 24th – Kayak: Dutch Gap Conservation Area - Paddle on sit-on-top kayaks to explore the lagoon, search for sunken treasure, and find your way through the maze.
