About This Activity

Welcome to Boricua Youth Reading Collective Program! What does being Puerto Rican mean to you? Have you ever wanted to learn more about Puerto Rican history and culture? Have you had bad experiences in your past reading classes? Do you have strong opinions on how to improve reading classes for high school students? What if a reading class also included music, art, movies, and other creative projects to help you learn more about your culture? We are inviting students ages 14-16 years old to participate in a research study called the Boricua Youth Reading Collective. This research study will take place at the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance, located at 3000 N Elbridge Ave, Chicago, IL 60618, as well as online using Zoom. Students will experience eight 2-hour learning sessions (16 hours total) that celebrate Boricua history through various reading, writing, discussions, and creative projects. Students will also share their opinions and experiences through their writing, as well as during audio recorded interviews, in order to help teachers understand how to design reading curricula in schools. Meet Your Instructor: Madeline Desi Kobayashi, a doctoral student at the University of Illinois Chicago, is conducting this research study.
