About This Activity
Description
Whether you’re a brand-new paddler or are just looking to refine your skills, this paddling basics class gives you the confidence to hit the water on your own! Learn paddling techniques, safety and gear selection for both canoes and kayaks. This is an American Canoe Association-certified instructional program. Earn a certificate and patch by taking our Paddling Basics class and paddling our series of four MD waterways at least once within a three-year period. Even if you’ve kayaked several times in the past, join our instructors and pick up tips to paddle more efficiently and practice safe boating skills. You will have the opportunity to paddle both a canoe and a kayak in this class.Participants under 16 are placed in a canoe or tandem kayak with an accompanying registered adult. If you register a child for this program, you MUST ALSO REGISTER AN ADULT at the same time. There is a Schools Out class (Rp9125.311 on May 16 that is JUST for youth; no parent registration required).
Family of three or more? These class dates don’t work for you? A Friends & Family Adventure is another great way to learn to fish on your schedule! Contact Matt Medicus for details or visit www.tinyurl.com/adventurepackages.

Minimal swimming ability required – we do not intentionally capsize the boats but canoes & kayaks can and do flip over. Life jackets are provided and required during the class.
Fees are per person. Canoes are two-person boats; kayaks are either single or double. Singles will be placed with another participant for the canoe portion of the program.
Detailed info emailed to the participant about a week prior to the program – Check your registration to be sure you get it! No experience necessary. All equipment provided for use during the program; paddlers may bring their own boat and/or life jacket pending approval by instructor. If planning to bring your own boat, please contact us for details before registering. For more information contact Matt Medicus, 410-313-1769 or mmedicus@howardcountymd.gov.Under 16 must be accompanied by a participating, registered parent or guardian - this is NOT a drop off program.
