About This Activity

Emergency Vet Summer Camp Do you have an aspiring veterinarian at home? This camp is their ticket into the exciting world of veterinary medicine! Through hands-on experiments, dissections, and engineering challenges, campers get an authentic look at what it takes to care for animals in a real clinical setting. What Campers Will Do: Perform a Physical Exam – Learn to evaluate an animal's condition using a real stethoscope, vital sign charts, and a heartworm cycle diagram. Every camper takes home their own first aid kit and AVMA Pet First Aid brochure. Battle Animal Diseases – Investigate common veterinary conditions including ear infections, construct an origami Foldscope microscope, and hunt for yeast in pet ear specimens to observe under magnification. Suturing Workshop – Practice basic suturing techniques, progressing from fruit to chicken legs or pigs' feet, just like real veterinary students. Engineering the Heart – Build a working heart pump model and explore how biology and engineering intersect in animal physiology. Dissections – Dissect sheep hearts, crayfish, and owl pellets while using veterinary coloring guides to connect structure with function. (Please discuss this aspect of the camp with your young scientist before registering!) Pet CPR & IV Skills – Practice pet CPR with Casper the CPR Dog and learn to draw blood using our Life/form Canine IV training leg. Bake Dog Treats – Use our included dog bone cookie cutter and recipe to bake homemade treats for your furry friends! Each week, we invite a local veterinarian, vet tech, or pet groomer to speak with campers — giving aspiring vets a chance to hear directly from the professionals they hope to become.
