Dog Obedience: Puppy Kindergarten

This activity is closed to further registration.
Dogs 12weeks to 20weeks (under 5months)- as of the class start date.
Humans: Handlers must be at least 7yrs old, but ages 7-15yrs must have an adult remain on site.
When registering - register the Human that will be working with the dog. There is a spot to enter the Dogs name after you select the human/ handler.
Have fun with your puppy while teaching them the beginnings of how to be a well-mannered dog.
Puppy Kindergarten will work with you and your puppy on focusing for better attention. You will learn how to get your pup to tolerate the collar & leash, and being handled by you and others (your Vet will greatly appreciate this!)
Nip unwanted behaviors like play biting and guarding toys or food before they become serious problems.
You’ll get tips on crate & potty training, as well as setting boundaries & helping your puppy understand the rules so that they can be a great and welcome member of your family.
Clear communication, patience, and consistent practice is the key to you and your puppy’s success.
Verbal and visual cues will be taught / used to communicate with your puppy.
Classes are held outside, please dress for the weather. Please be sure to wear sturdy closed toe shoes - NO sandals or flip flops.
Location: Class will meet at the Dog Park (park by softball fields). In case of rain, we will hold class under the pavilion shelter.
Week 1 - Puppy Introductions, Evaluation, Course review, Proper Leash / equipment use, "Look" cue
Week 2 - Walking on leash, crate training, nipping, "Sit" cue
Week 3 - Address jumping, address potty training, "Down" cue
Week 4 - "Stay" "Leave It" "Trade" cues
Week 5 - "Come" cue
Week 6 - Testing & Games
When you come to class please remember to have:
Collar - flat collar (buckle or clip), martingale, StarMark or pinch.
a 5' or 6' flat leash. ** no flexi (extendable) leashes **
LOTS of small soft treats or a toy to reward your dog with, and a bag to carry treats in.
If needed, harness is acceptable during class BUT only if it there is a leash clip in the front (chest) area.
Must bring current vaccination record to first class.
Handlers - please be sure to wear sturdy closed toe shoes - NO sandals or flip flops.

10% for Military or First Responder, ****must show proof BEFORE registering to get discount****

To Receive Military or First Responder Discount:
either stop by the parks & recreation office to register and show Military / First Responder ID
Email Parks@CulpeperCounty.gov or fax (540-727-2802) a copy of your ID to the office.
Then YOU must CALL (540-727-3412 ext 4 or 5) to register over the phone with a credit card to complete your transaction and reserve your space to receive the 10% discount.
ONLY ONE DISCOUNT PER FAMILY.
Other Important Information
Any female dog coming into season (estrus), or that is in season cannot attend any dog obedience classes until at least 7 days after visible discharge has stopped.
Any dog that displays aggression and is not under the control of the owner/handler, at the instructor's discretion, can be asked (can be required) to withdraw from the class.
1 - Are there any guarantees? No, success with training is reliant on the owners applying training techniques correctly and practice.
2 - Are prong collars allowed? At the trainers discretion after she has evaluated the dog.
3 - Are choke collars allowed? At the trainers discretion after she has evaluated the dog.
4 - Are E-collars allowed? No.
5 - Can we train off-leash? No. All training is ON leash. Off Leash training is an advanced skill, NOT for Puppy Kindergarten or Basic Obedience.
6 - May my family come with me? Yes, however only one person at a time works with the dog. Whoever is holding the leash is the one working with the dog. Each member of the family should take turns holding the leash and working with the dog.
7 - Can I drop off my child to do the class? Any handler ages 7-15 is required to have an adult stay on-site for the whole class at the training location (not sitting in the car). Anyone ages 16 and up may attend on their own.
8 - Can our other dogs come? No. The only dogs that may be on-site are dogs that are registered in the class.
Register the handler (human) for this class, there is a space to put your dogs information before you pay.
