About This Activity

MSBS 103 – Bike Maintenance & Repair is a hands-on class designed to teach riders how to keep their bikes safe, reliable, and ready to ride. Open to middle school students (with parents), high school students, and adults, this small-group workshop introduces participants to the ABC Quick Check—Air, Brakes, Chain, and Quick Releases/Check—a simple system used to inspect a bike before every ride. Using their own bikes, students will learn how to identify common issues and perform basic adjustments such as inflating tires, checking brake function and pad wear, inspecting and lubricating the chain, and ensuring wheels and components are properly secured. The majority of the class focuses on practical, hands-on repair skills, including removing wheels, replacing a tube, and patching a flat tire. Participants will learn how to find the source of a leak, fix the cause of the flat, and correctly reinstall the tube and tire. Instructors will also introduce essential bike tools, explain key maintenance concepts for drivetrains and brakes, and share best practices for ongoing bike care. By the end of the course, riders will feel confident performing basic maintenance and common repairs, helping them stay safe and self-sufficient on every ride.
