The Back-to-School Prep class for Shelton students entering the 5th grade is a three-hour session. Instruction is given by trained Shelton teachers using an individualized approach to match each child’s learning profile. The student to teacher ratio will be a maximum of 6:1. The Skills class will provide practice in writing skills, reading comprehension strategies, and will review fundamental math concepts. Reading: will include instruction and practice of reading skills through the use of auditory discrimination and application of phonetic word attack skills. Reading Comprehension: includes direct instruction in comprehension strategies, such as: following directions, getting the facts, detecting sequences, using context, getting the main idea, drawing conclusions, making predictions, creating imagery, and questioning. Writing: will review, practice and guide students through the process of paragraph writing from brainstorming to the final product. Computers in the Shelton Mobile Lab will be used during class time. Students can handwrite if preferred. Math: will review and drill the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals in preparation for entering 5th grade.
