The Back-to-School Skills class for Shelton students entering 7th or 8th grade is a 3-hour class taught by two trained Shelton teachers. The student to teacher ratio will be a maximum of 6:1. Students will spend half the class time working on writing and reading comprehension skills and the other half of class time on fundamental math concepts and skills. Reading Comprehension: includes direct instruction in comprehension strategies, such as: following directions, getting the facts, detecting sequences, using context, getting the main idea, drawing conclusions, making predictions, creating imagery, as well as questioning, annotating and highlighting pertinent text while reading, review and practice novel coding. Writing: will review, practice and guide students through the process of paragraph writing from brainstorming to the final product. Computers in the Shelton Mobile Labs will be used during class time. Students may handwrite if preferred. Math: will review and drill the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals in preparation for school in August.
