This class introduces the vocabulary of book anatomy, the tools needed for hand book binding and material considerations for making beginner book structures. On the first evening we will explore hand decorated papers, using broad edged mark-making tools and round pointed tip brushes in calligraphic ways. The second night we will stitch two pamphlet books, binding them with soft and hard covers. Finally we will create pocket accordion books and begin to consider how to design an artist book. All materials for the class are provided. There is a $20 materials fee payable to the instructor the night of class. Joelle Webber has spent over forty years collecting book arts techniques. At Mermaid Bindery, four pillars define Joelle's career. Binding books and boxes for clients, illustrating her original artist book sculptures, her Crafts in the Woods honor system shed, and designing workshops for many different communities of makers.
