Period C: Discovery Science Calling all young Scientists! In this class budding scientists will be engaged in a wide variety of experiments that will open their minds to how fun science can be. The idea behind science is to see what happens “if”. We will mix and measure formulas and see what happens when we change an ingredient and keep all other conditions the same. Sometimes we end up with something great and sometimes we might end with a dud. The goal is to teach students to problem solve, not be afraid to experiment, and use critical thinking skills for a desired result. Instructor Azar T. has taught in Athenian’s Afterschool Enrichment program and Summer program for years, and has also supported Athenian as a substitute teacher. We always appreciate her care with our students. Period D:Paper Mache Paper mache is a magical medium that transforms the simplest of materials into amazing works of 3D art. Using paper, flour, water and tape we can make almost anything...from simple masks to life sized 3D animals. We'll start with these basic ingredients and end up with painted, colorful sculptures. Students will explore creating simple 3D shapes with paper and tape and more complex shapes with the addition of armatures created of cardboard, wire, plastic bottles and whatever else we can think of. This class promises lots of creative problem solving and slightly messy fun. We are delighted for Kristen Calderon to return to Athenian Summer Programs and share her talents as both an artist and caring teacher.
