About This Activity
Give your child hands-on experience with real small engines in a safe, guided learning environment! This 12-week program introduces young students to the basics of how engines work through fun, interactive lessons that build confidence, teamwork, and curiosity. What Students Will Learn: • Shop safety and proper use of basic tools • How engines work: air, fuel, and spark • Engine parts identification and functions • Simple maintenance: air filters, oil checks, spark plugs • Teamwork during basic disassembly and reassembly • Cleaning and inspecting small engine parts • Safe demonstrations of engine startup and operation • Pride and confidence in mechanical skills Course Format: • 12 weeks – one session per week (2 hours each) • Students work in small teams of 4 • Mix of demonstrations, guided practice, and hands-on teamwork • Final review & Junior Mechanic certificate ceremony What Students Need to Bring: • Safety glasses • Notebook • Pencil • Closed-toe shoes (required) Contact: mechanicsclass101@gmail.com Bio: Gene Ledford is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, small business owner, and experienced instructor with over 20 years in the mechanical field. His career includes 10 years as a mechanic, along with extensive experience in fleet management, consulting, and leadership roles. Combined with an MBA, Gene brings a strong balance of technical expertise and business insight to everything he does. A proud husband and father of two homeschooled children, Gene values family and education. In the classroom, he is passionate about teaching hands-on skills, problem-solving, and the confidence to approach mechanical challenges. His goal is to ensure students not only learn how mechanical systems work, but also understand why those skills matter in their everyday life.
